Project-FlySafe Systems-WIMS-On-board Weather sensors / functions
Onboard weather sensors / functions

Pilots' needs for onboard weather sensors are geared towards a comprehensive and timely display of relevant hazards during flight.

No sensor installed today onboard aircraft can achieve this objective on its own; the solution is rather a collection of sensors and associated algorithms, sharing information through data fusion and complemented with consolidated ground information uplinked from the WIMS.

For FLYSAFE, the objective is to progress towards an onboard weather information management system by improving the current capability of the existing onboard weather radar, completing the validation of a LiDAR-based atmospheric hazard detector to progress towards a product for wake and CAT.

It is clear that the weather sensors, namely weather radar and LiDAR-based detection, warning and avoidance (DWA) systems, do have not the same technological maturity. The consolidation into a global product (as for the WIMS) is, therefore, not an objective which can be reached during FLYSAFE.
