Regarding terrain, FLYSAFE will innovate by evaluating terrain display to enhance the terrain awareness of the crew.
The structure of the NG ISS and the use of high bandwidth bus with enhanced protocols (ARINC 661) allow the definition of new display to be presented on the cockpit.
Three types of terrain presentation will be studied:
The advantage of each solution will be compared to the state-of-the-art during the evaluation phase using scenarios covering all phases of flight. Solutions will be proposed for future design depending on the evaluations results.
The new terrain display will draw new requirements on terrain database. Thus, it has been planned, within FLYSAFE, to actively participate to the definition of standards considering the on-board terrain database specifications.
Regarding the obstacles, FLYSAFE will perform an analysis of the requirements to determine, which obstacles are an issue for aircraft safety, how they shall be detected and avoided and when they shall be presented to the crew.
FLYSAFE will also perform a paper analysis on the opportunity of correlating the terrain data from a terrain database with terrain data provided by an enhanced ground-mapping mode of the weather radar. The end-result expected is the improvement of the terrain data integrity.
