Project
FLYSAFE Project Summary

Air traffic is expected, to triple world-wide within the next 20 years. With the existing on-board and on-ground systems, this would lead to an increase of aircraft accidents, in the same, or a higher proportion. Despite the fact that accidents are rare, this increase is perceived as unacceptable by society. New systems and solutions must be found to maintain the number of accidents at its current low level. This must be made first by providing the pilots with new systems allowing them to make the right decision at all times.

FLYSAFE is the Project federating the most relevant skills across Europe, to design, develop, implement, test and validate a complete Next Generation Integrated Surveillance System (NG ISS), going a generation further than the emerging integrated safety systems.

FLYSAFE is the first decisive big step towards the "VISION 2020" produced by the ACARE, for safety in airspace, with implementation of solutions ranging from 2 to 5 years after project end.

FLYSAFE focuses more particularly on the areas identified as the main causes of accidents around the world: loss of control, controlled flight into terrain, and approach and landing. It will address the three types of threats: atmospheric conditions, traffic collision and terrain collision.

FLYSAFE is the essential project developing solutions to enable all aircraft to get timely, dedicated, improved weather information, thanks to innovative new means, the Weather Information Management Systems (WIMS) which will gather, format and send to the aircraft all atmospheric data, as relevant for the safety of their flight, presented in an innovative and consistent way to the pilot

FLYSAFE groups a large team of key European stakeholders to achieve that goal. They are committed to put Europe at the leading edge of innovation and achievement in the field of air safety.

FLYSAFE is coordinated by THALES, 36 Partners from 14 different countries constitute a powerful consortium.
