The 3 First-Level Objectives (FLO) of FLYSAFE are:
1. "To develop, validate and test an innovative, efficient and competitive on-board integrated surveillance system (NG ISS), based on European resources, and prove that it increases safety"
2. "To develop, validate and test ground weather means (WIMSs) to provide aircraft with weather safety related information and prove that they increase safety"
3. "To develop international standards to support the definition of the two systems (on-board and on-ground) above"
The figure below presents the potential impact of FLYSAFE on fatal accidents based on the statistics for commercial aircraft between 1991 and 2001. FLYSAFE will tackle the major accidents occurrences by stretching from tactical to strategic information, allowing more time for the crew to assess a potential danger. Also, it will set-up HMI innovations to improve the crew's overall Situation Awareness for operations under bad weather, dangerously near to terrain and traffic collision avoidance.
