Project-European Vision
Relevance of FLYSAFE to EU Policy

The 6th Framework Programme is intended to support the EU policy to establish the European Research Area through new instruments such as the Integrated Projects which should have large scale of ambition and large capacity for integration.
FLYSAFE has been built with this overall view in mind, upon the guidelines and directives provided by the EC for Integrated Projects (IP), with the objectives to achieve ambitious goals, integration of European research capabilities with the required critical mass, management simplification and European added value.

Scale of ambition
One major ambition shared by European research centres, aircraft manufacturers and avionics equipment manufacturers in FLYSAFE is to take a leading position in the world-wide competition in the field of air transport safety systems: the FLYSAFE “vision” is to position Europe at the leading edge of the competition.
This can only be done through setting new standards in the field of air transport safety systems.
Most importantly, FLYSAFE will be the first project in the world grouping all stakeholders of the air transport and the meteorological communities to build together a joint system answering the same needs.
There is no equivalent project elsewhere in the world, and this gives Europe a unique chance to design and set the standard for a system of the future.

Integration of European research capabilities up to the required critical mass
The FLYSAFE ambition described above is beyond the resources and capabilities of any single national entity. It requires all the background and expertise of several partners in Europe from industry, research centres and universities and can only be envisaged at European level as an Integrated Project.
By clustering 36 research teams among the most experienced in Europe, FLYSAFE achieves the critical mass that is required to efficiently address complex aviation safety issues. The consortium comprises all types of stakeholders needed to achieve the goal .
Consequently, FLYSAFE integrates the widest range and scope of expertise at the European level.
A special attention has been made to involve small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and promote their activities, competence and skills.
Due to large spectrum of technological expertise required for the design of this Integrated System for all flight hazards protection, FLYSAFE will offer a real opportunity for all specialists in Europe to combine their skills in a concrete and challenging project.
All together, FLYSAFE will integrate about 150 engineers, technologists, scientists, aeronautical expert and pilots, from 36 organisations in 14 countries in Europe.
Finally, the coordinator has a long experience in leading ambitious European projects and has designed a robust and efficient structure that will facilitate the management and optimise the European added value.
