News-FLYSAFE – Aeronautics Days

FLYSAFE – Aeronautics Days, 19-21 June 2006, Vienna

The Fifth Community Aeronautics Days – Sustainable Solutions for New Horizons- was the premier event for European research and technology in aeronautics and air transport. Over 850 international stakeholders from across Europe and around the world discussed economic, environmental and societal challenges of air transport, debated future priorities in European aeronautics research and presented results of current research. The event took place from the 19-21 of June 2006 in the Vienna Congress Center, Austria.

The Aeronautics Days 2006 offered media a unique opportunity to meet decision makers and researchers from all relevant companies and organisations in the European aeronautics community. From press briefings to one-on-one meetings, Aerodays 2006 has provided the latest news and best insights into ongoing and planned cutting-edge research in areas that concern not only the latest technology, but also environmental issues, safety and security of passengers as well as the future of air transport in a time of ever-increasing worldwide mobility.
With a view to the upcoming EU’s next framework programme for research and technological development (Framework Programm 7(FP7), 2007-2013), Aerodays also played an important role for stakeholders to contribute to the direction European-funded research in aeronautics will take in the next seven years.

Parallel thematic sessions covered a variety of key research topics, including:
• The ‘greening’ of air transport;
• Improving cost efficiency;
• Ensuring customer satisfaction;
• Safety and security;
• Increasing time efficiency;
• Air transport of the future

Selected FP5 and FP6-projects as well as national projects had the opportunity to present exhibits and posters during the Aeronautics Days. In the context of this exhibition FLYSAFE was also represented with a booth. On a big Plasma Screen all necessary information were presented in a short movie and for further questions a number of FLYSAFE Project members were pleased to help. So, all interested visitors were able to inform themselves about FLYSAFE.

One Highlight was a Press briefing about European Commission funded projects dealing with safety and security topics. The moderator was Marco Brusati, the European Commission Project Officer for FLYSAFE. Joseph Huysseune, FLYSAFE project coordinator, informed the international press about the scope and the current status of the project. Furthermore Mr. Huysseune introduced FLYSAFE during the session "External Hazard and Accident Survivability".

The FLYSAFE project has been launched in February 2005 within the 6th Research and Development Framework Programme of the European Commission. FLYSAFE is the Project federating the most relevant skills across Europe to provide solutions for safety in airspace as defined by the ACARE VISION 2020. FLYSAFE intends to design, develop, implement, test and validate a complete Next Generation Integrated Surveillance System and to develop, validate and test Weather Information Management Systems to provide aircraft with weather related information and prove that they increase flight safety. Coordinated by THALES, FLYSAFE groups 36 partners from 14 countries for a 4 year joint effort with a total budget of 53 million Euros and a 29 million Euro European Commission contribution.
