EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
This document is the detailed specification of the Terrain and Obstacle Surveillance function, D 4.1.1 "Terrain and obstacle awareness specification". It details the requirements related to the TAWS basic and new features. The new features include Obstacle awareness and alerting, safety altitude awareness and alerting, functional output for Vertical Display and terrain/obstacle/SA flight plan checking. Tightly related to Terrain and Obstacle Surveillance are the supporting databases like terrain, obstacle, airport, navigation and MSA.

Requirements are proposed in two categories: the functional requirements which are the basis for the development of the functions and the HMI recommendations to be discussed with the cockpit display specification in WP 5.5 and the HMI transversal group.

Note that the terrain/obstacle strategic conflict detection functionality – originally part of the terrain/obstacle surveillance described in the high level specification – has been moved to the WP 5.4 Strategic Data Consolidation due to change in work-sharing. As a consequence, this functionality is not specified in this document.
