EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This document is the third contractual output of WP 1.2.1 “Overall System Specification and integration process definition”. It describes, in more details than in D 1.2.1-1 and D 1.2.1-2, the overall functional architecture of the proposed FLYSAFE systems for the target product and as they will be developed during the project. The main functions of the FLYSAFE systems are described, amendments for the project evaluations are added and the functional requirements are listed, including the
ones already derived in the FLYSAFE Operational Concept Document.
As rather complex systems will be developed and integrated in FLYSAFE, two types of evaluations have been identified:
- Part Task Evaluation (PTE) denotes the evaluation of the functionalities of a sub-system or a limited set of sub-systems by experts in the course of the development and integration phase of the project.
- Main Task Evaluation (MTE) refers to the evaluation of an integrated set of systems through its end result. Two types of MTE are identified at the issue date of this report: the ones using the NLR Full Flight Simulator environment for the NG-ISS functionalities of consolidated awareness and the flight tests for the weather integrated surveillance.
Within the ground segment, meteorological and standard aviation products together with observations are assimilated into the Weather Information Management Systems (WIMS) and the Routine Weather Data. Then the combined information from the Weather Information Management Systems, routine weather data and volcanic ash is fed to the ground weather processors. The processors are themselves defined in terms of coverage as a local and a global processor. The ground weather processors are interconnected with the air traffic management. Finally the weather information from the processors is transmitted to the airborne segment over datalink.
Most of the ground segment aspects will be developed for the FLYSAFE Flight Tests, while simulation or emulation of the subcomponents deemed interesting to the Full Flight Simulation will be provided.
Onboard the aircraft, the airborne segment is composed of the systems and functions hosted on the aircraft either functionally inside the perimeter of the FLYSAFE Next Generation Integrated Surveillance System or outside. The functions external to the NG-ISS include aircraft sensors, probes, flight controls, weather information services, database server, navigation and flight management systems, flight deck displays and crew controls, and the detection of non-collaborative targets. The NG-ISS hosts the weather, traffic and terrain surveillance functions, the fusion functions for weather, traffic and terrain hazards, the tactical alert management for tactical operations, the consolidation of weather, traffic and terrain data with a filter to detect conflicts for strategic operations, the intelligent crew support, the data loading, configuration management, maintenance and audio/display management system.
Most of the terrain and traffic aspects will be developed for the Full Flight Simulation, whereas the core of airborne weather surveillance is geared towards the Flight Tests. Nevertheless, simulation will allow having the airborne weather radar related functionalities combined with traffic and terrain awareness.
Finally, no development of the helicopter specifics is foreseen within FLYSAFE.
In short, this document concentrates on the high-level functional elements (architecture, description, requirements and interfaces) necessary to start the detailed specification in the work packages 2-3-4 and 5. Compliance tables provide a synthetic view of how it is foreseen in FLYSAFE to include each requirement.
