Consortium-Working groups-Terrain Hazards-WP4.2 Obstacle situation awareness
WP 4.2 Obstacle situation awareness

This function goal is to enable obstacle situation awareness on board the aircraft and in the meantime, to provide the crew with an alerting device proposing him a safe avoidance solution. The result of this work package is obstacle function software ready to be integrated into the NG ISS.
As of today, no extensive study has been made to determine what is the most appropriate level of information about man-made obstacles to be included in an on-board database.
Based on the analysis of the accidents and incidents in WP 1, the team will define the obstacles that should be part of an obstacle database and will define how to structure such a database. The latter will be closely related to WP 7.2 "standards" through which the FLYSAFE team will actively contribute to the definition of international standards.
Once the obstacle database content and structure is defined, the team will propose algorithms to detect and avoid the obstacles.
Finally the team will study how and when to present which obstacles on the crew displays. The issue of the obstacle display with the cartographic, 2D½ or 3D modes of terrain presentation will be addressed.
A specific attention will be drawn toward the helicopter requirements in order to evaluate possible solutions specific to helicopter needs.
