Consortium-Working groups-Terrain Hazards-WP4.1 Terrain situation awareness
WP 4.1 Terrain situation awareness

This function goal is to improve the terrain situation awareness in order to decrease the number of triggered alerts due to the aircraft situation relative to terrain. The result of this work package is terrain function software ready to be integrated into the NG ISS.
FLYSAFE will develop new terrain presentations with enhanced terrain situation awareness:

  • Cartographic presentation, providing the crew with a presentation of terrain altitude relative to sea level. Such a presentation will take into account the technical constraints of Air Transport aircraft architecture.
  • 2D ½ presentation (shading effect) on ND to be compared to the cartographic one. This will capitalise on the experience gained in ISAWARE (I and II).
  • 3D presentation of terrain on Navigation Display (ND) for longer-term development in commercial air transport market.
This WP will also analyse the system architecture on-board commercial Air Transport aircraft (Airbus) necessary to cope with such new technologies.
The team will also perform research on terrain presentation and avoidance for helicopter implementation.
The increasing number of on-board terrain databases proposed on the avionics market from different suppliers leads to the need for a standardisation of these terrain databases in structure, content and format.
Therefore proposals for standards related to terrain will be elaborated as a basis for WP 7.2 "standards". This way the FLYSAFE team will actively contribute to the definition of international standards.
