WP 3.2: Customisation and Validation

This work package will customise the software components provided by previous (MA-AFAS, ISAWARE II) and on-going projects (C-ATM, EMMA) and adapt them to the FLYSAFE specification.
The objectives are to:

  • prototype modifications of the HMI as proposed in WP 3.1
  • assess by a part task evaluation these HMI advancements
  • identify, at an early stage, the traffic-related functions to be developed in WP 5.
Regarding the data link technologies for traffic surveillance, FLYSAFE has selected 1090ES ADS-B as a potential candidate, but will review the different possibilities and select the most appropriate one when necessary in the project.
The ground traffic hazards are dealt with in the FP 6 IP “EMMA”.  FLYSAFE will use the outputs of EMMA and integrate them into the Next Generation Integrated Surveillance System.
The FLYSAFE team will use existing models of sensors for TCAS, ADS-B and Mode S, and customise new functions taking account of the outputs of WP 1.2.3:
  • ASAS functions from previous projects and BAES internal development. However, if C-ATM goes ahead, then full appropriate use will be made of the results of that project.
  • Runway incursion and taxi collision functions in EMMA with a contingency plan based on ISAWARE II results.
  • Anticipation of traffic hazard functions from ISAWARE II, providing the crew with advisory information of potential conflict ahead of current position anticipated beyond the TCAS alert.
The outputs of above mentioned project will be built on to include enhanced HMI, compatible with the display of weather and terrain information on a multifunction display. These functions will be integrated into the NG ISS context by formatting the outputs for integration into the tactical alert management and strategic data consolidation functions of the NG ISS.
The part task evaluation will be done primarily at BAE Systems using recorded traffic data from NLR's traffic generator tool TMX.  During the final evaluation task (WP 6.7) traffic will be generated using NLR’s ATC simulator (NARSIM).
