WP 3.1: Analysis and Specification
This work package aims to define a traffic situation awareness system to be integrated into a NG ISS. The objective is to improve the safety of air transport by:
- Introducing new airborne traffic situational awareness functions to support the flight crew in coping with airborne traffic threats, preventing runway incursions and preventing taxi collisions.
- Specifying functional requirements for airborne traffic conflict detection, runway incursion prevention and taxi collision avoidance.
- Proposing operational HMI design alternatives for the new functions.
The study will take into account ASAS Package 1 of the Joint Co-ordination Board (EUROCONTROL & European Commission), which proposes systems for spacing safety and for prevention of runway incursion and taxi collision. The latter utilises on-board equipment only and provides the crew with an autonomous on-ground "safety net".
This WP will include a review of the work done by previous and on-going project in the areas of air traffic and ground traffic situation awareness. The software specifications developed by those projects will be analysed and compared with the results of WP 1.2.3 “Traffic Awareness Specification”, and a consolidated detailed specification produced for the traffic hazard function of the FLYSAFE platform.
The WP will study the impact of the different systems on the presentation of traffic information together with terrain and weather phenomena. Taking into account traffic display issues, the analysis will allow the definition of HMI design alternatives, procedure design alternatives and the specification of the interfaces for the software to run on the FLYSAFE platform.
