AIRBUS Deutschland GmbH is the German part of the European company Airbus S.A.S., which is an EADS Joint company with BAE Systems. Airbus S.A.S. is the major aerospace company in Europe. The company is engaged in the development and manufacture of advanced high performance commercial transport aircraft and is recognised for its technological expertise in nearly all fields of aeronautical engineering.

Within the Airbus consortium, Airbus Deutschland GmbH is particularly responsible for the development and production of the major part of the fuselage including systems and passenger cabin, the vertical fin, the equipment of the wings and the final assembly of narrow-body aircraft (A318, A319, A321). The company’s workforce currently amounts to approximately 18,500, roughly half of which work at the Airbus Deutschland GmbH headquarters in Hamburg. The turnover in 2001 has been 4.822 billion €.

R&TD capabilities of Airbus Deutschland GmbH cover all aspects of aircraft design and optimisation (aerodynamics, aeroelastics, structures, weights, performances, operating costs, environmental aspects etc.), airframe and systems development and engine integration.

Airbus Deutschland GmbH is participating in and coordinating a number of current European research projects (FP5 & FP6) including the following wake vortex related research projects: AWIATOR, I-WAKE, ATC-WAKE and Wakenet2-Europe.

In FLYSAFE, the company will be particularly active in work packages ‘Atmospheric Awareness Specification’, Wake Vortex Detection enhanced by Prediction’, ‘Exploitation’ and ‘Dissemination’ of results.
