CNRS Service d'Aéronomie focuses on the study of the atmosphere of the Earth (from ground to mesosphere), other planets and comets as well as the interplanetary and interstellar environment. They are competent in both resolving the scientific issue and dealing with modelling and real measurement.

The teams involved in FLYSAFE are the DCAM (Dynamic and Climate of the Medium Atmosphere) with 8 researchers, 5 post-doctoral students and 3 doctoral students and the OTTS (Waves, Turbulence and Signal Processing) with 8 researchers. Their experience of in-situ measurements of the atmospheric environment at cruise level is needed in FLYSAFE to specify the equipment for CAT detection. Hence the main involvement of CNRS lies within WP2.3.2.

The DCAM team studies the ozone destruction in the polar region, the tropics role in the evolution of stratospheric ozone, the high-troposphere/low stratosphere region and the chemical and solar interaction with the climate. This research involves measurements of the atmosphere with balloons and space-borne LiDAR and modelling with assimilation of satellite data.

The OTTS team works on characterising the small scale fluctuations of the atmospheric parameters and estimating their impact on the mean circulation. They use balloon measurements, radar, satellite observations and sophisticated signal processing techniques.

The DCAM and OTTS team know-how will be exploited by FLYSAFE in WP2.3.2 by utilising a) their knowledge of cruise-level atmospheric turbulence to specify the parameters to be detected by a LiDAR, their CAT modelling experience to validate dimensioning hypothesis of the proposed LiDAR and b) their familiarisation with the UV LiDAR technology that is one candidate for the CAT detection sensor studied in WP2.3.2. The interaction of the aeronautical world and the atmospheric environment research in WP2 and the translation of atmospheric measurement information into aviation hazard will be beneficial to both FLYSAFE and CNRS.
