Austro Control has been entrusted with the task of maintaining air traffic safety in Austria. The company has evolved from the former “Federal Office for Civil Aviation” on Jan 1, 1994. Its main role and task are to ensure the safe, efficient and timely operation of air traffic, the provision of relevant data and aeronautical information and the provision of aeronautical meteorological services to aviation. On average, about 2.800 controlled aircraft are operating daily in Austrian airspace. Austro Control has a staff of just under 1000, of which 300 are licensed air traffic controllers, and around 95 are meteorologists and forecasters as well as observers. Furthermore, the safety of aircraft, training of pilots and other aviation personnel is being monitored by Austro Control. Austro Control has been actively involved in several international projects in the field of aviation, and also in meteorological international projects such as the Mesoscale Alpine Programme (MAP), which took place in 1999 and had its operations headquarters at the Austro Controls site at Innsbruck Airport. In this project, hazardous conditions such as gravity waves, severe downslope winds and terrain-induced turbulence were studied alongside with intense precipitation events south of the Alps. |
